Specialized vocabulary is used in everyday English conversations. In this conversation Emma asks Luke the everyday question ‘what have you been up to lately?’ Luke’s answer includes specialized vocabulary to talk about his new hobby of making guitars.

Emma (00:02):
This is an everyday English conversation with Dialogue Frog. So, what have you been up to lately?
Luke (00:08):
I've been woodworking.
Emma (00:10):
Woodworking. Wow. So, you are making things out of wood.
Luke (00:16):
Mm-hmm.
Emma (00:16):
Like chairs?
Luke (00:18):
Not chairs.
Emma (00:19):
Pianos?
Luke (00:20):
Not pianos.
Emma (00:21):
Houses?
Luke (00:22):
Not houses.
Emma (00:23):
Well, then what are you making?
Luke (00:25):
Guitars.
Emma (00:25):
Oh yeah. Okay. I don't think anybody is surprised.
Luke (00:29):
That's true.
Emma (00:30):
But isn't that difficult?
Luke (00:32):
It is challenging. I'm still learning, but it's a lot of fun.
Emma (00:38):
This is like a hobby, right? You, you are now making guitars as a hobby.
Luke (00:42):
Uh-huh. Yep.
Emma (00:43):
You can't buy any more guitars. You own all of the guitars, and so now you're just inventing new ones.
Luke (00:49):
Pretty much.
Emma (00:51):
I guess that's what you have to do. How does a person learn how to make a guitar?
Luke (00:57):
Um, this is like anything else where you follow tutorials and watch other people do it and, and then learn through trial and error.
Emma (01:10):
Are there like, could a person actually go to school to learn how to make guitars? Are there like programs where you could learn, called luthier? Is that what it's called?
Luke (01:18):
Mm-hm. Luthiery.
Emma (01:18):
Luthiery.
Luke (01:18):
Well, that's the, yeah. One, one is a luthier, and so I guess the study of it is luthiery.
Emma (01:31):
Okay. But you're not doing a formal study. You're just learning how to do it on your own.
Luke (01:36):
Yeah.
Emma (01:38):
Well that's cool.
Luke (01:39):
Thanks.
