You are listening to Dialogue Frog's short English conversations. So, Luke, you recently got a new phone, right?

Luke 0:09
It's true. I got a new phone.

Emma 0:11
Is it-did you get a smartphone or a dumb phone?

Luke 0:14
Um, I have not conducted a full IQ test on it yet, but I suspect it to have above average intelligence.

Emma 0:24
That's that's what you look for in a phone: above average intelligence.

Luke 0:29
It's true.

Emma 0:30
You don't want it to be too smart.

Luke 0:31
No.

Emma 0:31
'Cause you don't know what it knows.

Luke 0:33
Right.

Emma 0:33
Yeah.

Luke 0:35
It does slightly disturb me how much my phone knows. Its with the latest generation of phones.

Emma 0:40
Yeah.

Luke 0:41
Um-

Emma 0:42
Its-

Luke 0:42
So that's another podcast.

Emma 0:45
It's crazy how they are sophisticated enough now to like, know how to charge themselves based on your sleep cycle. Like, that's-

Luke 0:53
That's-

Emma 0:54
That was a line.

Luke 0:55
Yeah, that's-that's a needed need need to go back to dumb phones, I think.

Emma 1:03
I wonder dumb phones can do that now, too.

Luke 1:05
That's true.

Emma 1:06
Yeah.

Luke 1:07
Maybe there're smartphones masquerading as dumb phones.

Emma 1:11
That's probably the case. Yeah. So what-what do you look for when you're shopping for a new phone?

Luke 1:18
Um, I guess I just like it to already be updated, 'cause I tend to not like to update my operating system. So, if it's on the latest operating thing, then usually I can, um, it'll last longer. Uh, but I mean, that's, I mean, most of them already updated anyway, so it's not a problem. I-I, I really don't use that many features of my phone. How about you?

Emma 1:49
Hm, what-what do I do? I use, I use my phone, probably mostly to maybe check email and I do use a few apps. Like there's a few, I guess its called entertainment apps. So it's like apps where you would like read web comics or web novels. I have several of those. Um, I don't do much of gaming on my phone.

Luke 2:13
Right.

Emma 2:14
Some people use their phones for a lot of like, games, but-

Luke 2:18
Yeah.

Emma 2:18
Yeah.

Luke 2:20
Well, I think our phones are both on the smaller size.

Emma 2:23
That's true.

Luke 2:24
So it makes it harder to game on those.

Emma 2:30
Do you-do you actually use your phone to make phone calls?

Luke 2:34
Yeah. A little bit. Not as much as I text though.

Emma 2:38
Yeah. I-I think I'm one of the rare people who actually prefers to make a phone call to get things done. 'Cause it-it drives me a little bit nuts when it's email back and forth over days when you could just have a phone call with somebody and have it decided in three minutes.

Luke 2:55
Yeah. Yeah, I could see that.

Emma 3:00
But some people, they are not comfortable making phone calls anymore.

Luke 3:05
Yeah.

Emma 3:06
They prefer email or text.

Luke 3:08
Yeah.

Emma 3:09
Or even for like scheduling an appointment with a doctor or-

Luke 3:12
Right. I kind of like text, 'cause if someone's busy, then you can just you can get your message out there and go on with your day, but then they have their time to respond to it, and so it's kind of, for less urgent things, it's nice.

Emma 3:28
Well, there's an etiquette to texting. Like if-if someone doesn't reply right away, sometimes it feels like-

Luke 3:34
Yeah.

Emma 3:35
Like you're forgotten.

Luke 3:38
Abandoned.

Emma 3:38
Or abandoned. Yeah. So that- there is a line there. There's, you never know if someone's taking time to reply to you, or if they don't want to reply to you.

Luke 3:48
Yeah. That's true. Um. But, you know, I used to worry about that. But then I realized a lot of people that I've talked to are just like, "No, I just got busy." So.

Emma 3:59
That's dangerous when you read a text, but don't reply right away, and then you forget about it.

Luke 4:03
Right.

Emma 4:03
I think. Yeah, I might be guilty of having done that a few times.

Luke 4:06
Sure.

Emma 4:07
Yep.

Luke 4:08
Yep. Me too.

Emma 4:10
