You are listening to Dialogue Frog’s short English conversations. We’ve started a new hobby. We’ve tried to start a new hobby.
Luke 0:10
Yeah.
Emma 0:11
So we were inspired by watching some, uh, old Bob Ross videos.
Luke 0:17
Yep.
Emma 0:17
‘The Joy of Painting,’ and we thought that ‘hey, that might be an easy/fun thing to do!’
Luke 0:26
Yep, and we were wrong.
Emma 0:28
We were wrong. Painting is kind of hard.
Luke 0:31
It’s really challenging, like, it’s almost like calculus.
Emma 0:38
You know, I was thinking the exact same thing.
Luke 0:40
Yeah.
Emma 0:40
It’s exactly like calculus.
Luke 0:41
Right.
Emma 0:43
Except not.
Luke 0:44
Yeah. Well, and people always talk about paint by numbers, so, I I guess-
Emma 0:48
Oh.
Luke 0:48
I was doing it wrong.
Emma 0:51
That-That’s a technique of painting, perhaps.
Luke 0:53
Oh. Oh.
Emma 0:54
Yeah. So yeah, we we discovered painting has a lot of challenges to it.
Luke 1:02
Mm hm.
Emma 1:03
Like, it starts with having the right materials.
Luke 1:07
Right.
Emma 1:08
So we, we first discovered that we bought the wrong brushes.
Luke 1:13
Yep.
Emma 1:13
So we couldn’t even do the Bob Ross technique the first time we did it.
Luke 1:17
Yep. And then we also discovered that painting’s expensive, and-
Emma 1:24
Surprisingly, so!
Luke 1:26
Yeah.
Emma 1:26
I don’t-is it just oil paint? I guess I should I should look at other types of paint, like acrylic paint and watercolors.
Luke 1:31
Yeah. The canvases weren’t too bad, but the paints themselves were like, whoa.
Emma 1:38
And part of it might be because of the technique that we’re learning through Bob Ross probably requires more paint it’s not-maybe it’s just not an economical method.
Luke 1:48
Right.
Emma 1:51
Yeah.
Luke 1:53
But you don’t have to wait three days for the oils to dry, so that’s something.
Emma 1:59
That’s true. That’s true. Maybe, though, my painting would’ve looked better if I did wait three days for it to dry. Oh it, yeah, it’s hard. Everything from, like the composition to knowing how the paint behaves on the canvas. Preparing the canvas before you put the paint on. Properly, like, cleaning your brushes between paint colors?
Luke 2:24
Yep.
Emma 2:25
There’s- it’s a complex process.
Luke 2:28
Yeah, it is and there’s a lot that Bob Ross does that you don’t really pick up on when you’re just watching it, but he actually goes super fast when he’s painting.
Emma 2:39
Oh, man, it took us like, what, two hours to follow a 30 minute video?
Luke 2:43
Yeah.
Emma 2:45
We learned a lot that day.
Luke 2:47
We did, such as, ‘look at some other hobbies too.’
Emma 2:54
But do you think you’ll keep painting?
Luke 2:55
I think so, and I tried a couple other paintings that weren’t exclusively with the Bob Ross method that I thought turned out a little better, um-
Emma 3:05
Maybe that’s the thing, like the Bob Ross videos are kind of an inspiration-
Luke 3:09
Mm hm.
Emma 3:09
Rather than, like trying to copy it stroke for stroke.
Luke 3:15
Yeah.
Emma 3:17
Okay, well, good luck to you as you continue painting. I d-I don’t know if I can keep going. I’ll probably try. I’ll try not to be too discouraged. It’s kind of discouraging though, when you look at your painting and you look at Bob Ross’s painting-
Luke 3:32
Yeah.
Emma 3:32
-and they’re not the same.
Luke 3:33
Yeah, yeah, they’re not the same.
Emma 3:34
Not even close.
Luke 3:36
And you’re like, ‘How did I get here? Let me look at my life decisions again. Oh, yeah.’
Emma 3:45
You shouldn’t have gone with that alizarin crimson.
Luke 3:48
Nope.
Emma 3:49
No, or that burnt umber.
Luke 3:51
Nope.
Emma 3:54
Oh well. All right. Well, this has been another fun conversation with Dialogue Frog. Please visit our website dialoguefrog.com for transcripts and vocabulary.
