Geoff 0:12
Hi, Emma, glad to be here talking about coffee. It’s my favorite subject.
Emma 0:16
We all like to talk about coffee. Have you had your coffee today?
Geoff 0:20
I have.
Emma 0:22
Did you- do you like to make your coffee? Or do you tend to go out and buy coffee from a coffee shop?
Geoff 0:28
I like to make my own coffee, unless I’m in a hurry. Um, I like to buy my own beans, grind my own beans and then make the coffee with a pour over device.
Emma 0:40
That’s quite a process. It can be time consuming.
Geoff 0:42
It is but you know, you just um, you get you practice it get down to a routine and then um, you can do it pretty quickly. And it’s no more doesn’t take any longer than um, pressing a button on the on the drip-
Emma 1:00
Automatic.
Geoff 1:01
The drip coffeemaker.
Emma 1:02
Yeah.
Geoff 1:02
Yeah.
Emma 1:03
So, are you picky about the coffee beans that you buy?
Geoff 1:09
Uh, no, not really.
Emma 1:12
So, to you, what matters more is how you make the coffee, not, what kind of coffee you use?
Geoff 1:17
That’s, that’s the case for me. Yes, I think the process is, the process by which you brew the coffee is is, um is the biggest factor in how it ends up tasting. Using old pre-ground beans, I think gives you stale tasting coffee. But if you grind them fresh and make it fresh, I think it tastes better. And the pour over method is extracts the flavors from the beans a lot better.
Emma 1:48
I I agree with you there. I also grind my own coffee. I think that’s important. But I’m I’m picky about the coffee beans that I buy. I’m I very particularly like light roast coffee. Sometimes I like medium roast. I definitely don’t like dark roast. Or espresso. Do you make espresso?
Geoff 2:07
Sometimes I have an espresso machine. It’s not a very good espresso machine. But it does work. Um, it’s actually not any more convenient than the pour over, and um, so the point of espresso is that it’s faster and you can drink it faster. But if it takes so much longer to make, and there’s more cleanup at the end, it kind of defeats the purpose.
Emma 2:35
But you don’t buy anything labeled explicitly as an espresso bean. When you make your espresso with your machine.
Geoff 2:43
No, I use I use my regular coffee for espresso. I just grind it finer, which I think is the wrong thing to do. I think you’re supposed to buy espresso beans.
Emma 2:52
I wonder if you’d notice a taste difference if you did that.
Geoff 2:55
I probably would. I’m sure I’m doing it all wrong. I’m sure a real barista would tell me 100 ways I’m doing it wrong.
Emma 3:02
Well, I’ve had your coffee before and it’s quite delicious.
Geoff 3:06
Oh, thank you. Appreciate that.
Emma 3:09
Well, this was yet another wonderful conversation on coffee. We look forward to seeing you next time on Dialogue Frog.
